New York Lawmakers, Casinos Make Parallel Sports Betting Progress

New York State is preparing for the official greenlighting of sports wagering that could happen in the foreseeable future. This includes both work on the set of rules that would guide the future field and preparation onsite of the casino venues located in Upstate New York that could soon welcome their first sports betting enthusiasts. Projections are that the offering would also be available online if lawmakers manage to make up their mind before June’s adjourning.

We are on the verge of major changes in the gaming field of New York that have the potential to affect both Americans and Canadians alike. Due to its proximity, gaming enthusiasts from the north will inevitably be attracted enough to cross the border and participate in legal sports wagering in Upstate New York casino venues to the likes of Resorts World Catskills, Rivers Casino and Resort Schenectady, del Lago Resort and Casino, and Tioga Downs.

Mobile Sports Betting Brings Greater Gaming Revenue

The seven Native American casinos would also launch a sports wagering operation. The state wants to remain competitive and join other states that have already regulated the sports wagering field. Projections show that this move might end up ranking New York better than Nevada when it comes to betting on sports events.

Time is ticking away and lawmakers have to make up their mind on some pivotal issues related to the future gaming offering. Mobile sports wagering might be a thing in many states, but there is strong opposition in New York. In its current state, the sports wagering bill allows wagering on sports betting in brick-and-mortar facilities only, a feature that severely restricts gaming enthusiast.

Many of them are eager to wager online from the comfort of their own home or wherever they are via their mobile phone. This is what many of them are used to doing thanks to offshore sports wagering apps thriving in the unregulated market. May 20 is eyed as a deadline for comments on the proposed set of rules.

May 20 is the Comments Deadline

Mobile wagering opposition cites arguments to the likes of problem gambling and legal age restrictions that could easily be disregarded if players access sportsbooks with their phones. Joseph Addabbo chairing the Senate and Gary Pretlow chairing the Assembly have both introduced bills in support of mobile sports betting.

Recent projections show that the addition of mobile sports wagering is inevitably going to increase the gaming revenue on a state level. Estimations show that over US$1 billion in gaming revenue would be amassed with the addition of online gaming over the span of a single year. If the state has to rely on brick-and-mortar gaming solely, it is setting itself for some US$48.3 million a year.

While lawmakers are working on the set of rules, the casino venues are working on their sports betting lounges that would soon welcome their first players. Del Lago Resorts and Casino recently removed as many as 300 slot devices which opened space for the new DraftKings Sportsbook. This summer could see the official launch of sports betting on site. Rivers Casino and Resort in Schenectady also commenced work on its sports wagering lounge adjacent to the dining area.
